What is sunscreen & why is SPF important for daily use?
Sunscreen is well known for protecting the skin of the face and body against skin cancer and pigmentation. In the UK as we have mainly dull, overcast and dark days it is still thought that SPF is only required when taking a flight out of the UK.
We need to think in terms of daylight protection not sun protection. If it is daylight the sun is there, and we need to protect from its rays using a full spectrum block of UVA and UVB protection.
What is UVB?
SPF only measures the sunscreen ability to filter UVB rays. UVB rays are the rays related to sunburn and skin cancer.
What is UVA?
UVA is around every day it is related to increase in skin cancer, UVA rays penetrate deeper than UVB rays and cause aging, influences collagen and darkens the skin.
Sunscreen with the active ingredient zinc oxide contained protects against UVA and UVB rays (zinc oxide is contained in Juliette Armand Sunfilm range) an ingredient that acts as a natural sunscreen physically blocking rather than chemically blocking the UV rays.
SPF does not measure UVA rays. The only way to protect against these rays is to use a full spectrum block. It must be mentioned that UVA rays can penetrate through windows.
Why is the SPF in my foundation not enough?
In order to get the full protection of any SPF a teaspoon amount is usually suffice for the face and neck any excess wipe on the back of the hands. When using foundation, a pea sized amount will be used therefore the coverage provided from your foundation is not enough. The SPF in foundation is not always a full spectrum block.
